More than Forty Thousand Guests Visited the Transport Museum’s Temporary Exhibition Presenting its Unique Vehicles

Similarly to the previous year, the Transport Museum’s exhibition, which opened at the end of May in the ci-devant Northern Maintenance Depot, closed with great success. Visitors could look at unique pieces of the museum’s collection, such as the Ford Model T of 1926 or the steam locomotive nicknamed “The Ghost”. The future venue of the museum has ascended to a well-earned position among the most popular family programs and exhibition venues.

Visitors could see the temporary exhibition “Once there was the Northern…and the Story Goes on”, presenting the history of the venue and legendary locomotives such as the one No. 242 nicknamed “The Ghost” and tying the Hungarian speed record of steam engines, in the future home of the Transport Museum, the Northern Maintenance Depot for the first time, last summer.

The exhibition opened at the end of May this year with upgraded content, including unique cars, buses and other "rubber-tyred" vehicles. Owing to the government's support, the institution is implementing the most extensive collection development programme in its history. Several vehicles acquired as part of this programme are on display, such as a 1926 Ford Model T and a recently restored rear-engine Ikarus. The appearance of the new vehicles helped the museum present its backroom activities: visitors had the opportunity to peep into the secrets and tricks of collection and restoration. The temporary display entitled “The Unbuilt Budapest”, presenting the transport visions related to the capital’s last one hundred years, added further colouring to the contents of the overall exhibition.

The Diesel Hall housed popular programmes: night programmes were provided for the visitors within the framework of the Museums’ Night in June, veteran automobiles arrived in July, an Ikarus meeting was held in August, while in September, a festival was organised jointly with the Single-parent Family Centre. The Museum regularly organised museum education classes, unique interactive guided tours, and velocipede-hand-car rides.

Regarding the remarkable success, the exhibition was open for visitors till Sunday, 2nd October instead of the originally planned 30th September. Last weekend visitors were presented with the museum’s operation and unique pieces of the collection in a thematic guided tour, and they could try the LEGO model railway layouts. More than forty thousand people visited the temporary exhibition in 2022.
