A few years after the first airplanes had taken off, the idea of their application for military purposes arose as well. While in case of land army the use of planes was more or less devoid of problems, in case of the navy the problem of the operation of planes from ships needed to be solved – this was the only mode to make planes useful for fleets as well. In the years before WW I European naval powers got to mother ships operating hydroplanes. Before and during the war the British fleet was the front-runner in the field of naval aviation, and beside observation flights they also executed several combat flights with their planes launched from ships. They were the first to build aircraft carriers operating wheeled aircraft; these ships had a significant role later, during WW II. The presentation introduces the first decade of naval aviation.

The presentation is delivered in Hungarian language.
